06/09 Navigation course

Want to brush up on your navigation skills?

The club is running a one-day course on Sunday 6th September near Dorney Common, between Eton and Maidenhead.

The instructor will be Stuart Montgomery, our Touring Member. He is accredited to teach under the National Navigation Award Scheme (NNAS) and will structure the course so that it includes elements from NNAS Bronze and Silver standards. (But please note that the course will not include assessment for the awards themselves.)

The course will start with “handrail” navigation, following linear features like paths and streams, and we will look at how to estimate distance and time-required. We will then do some basic work on taking and using compass bearings.

Time/place

We will start at 09.30 from Eton Wick village, where there is ample parking, walking alongside the Thames to Eton, then past Thames Valley Athletic Centre, and then back along the Jubilee River to Eton Wick. We should finish at about 16.00.

Cost

The course costs £15 per person, in aid of club funds. Maximum group size is 6 plus instructor.

Course Requirements

Participants will need to bring a copy of the 1:25,000 map of the area (Ordnance Survey Explorer series: sheet 160 “Windsor, Weybridge and Bracknell). You’ll also need a compass (Silva Type 4 or equivalent – it should have a 1:25,000 roamer). Please bring a packed lunch as you will be walking all day! Comfortable footwear is essential: sturdy trainers or light boots.
