Cross country ski trip to Akaslompolo, Finland
14–21 March 2010
Popular trip to explore tracks in beautiful Lapland
This cross country ski-ing trip to the resort of Yllas in Finland has become a popular annual event.
The village is situated inside the Arctic Circle near the Swedish border. Skiing is on an extensive network of well prepared tracks on undulating terrain. It has an excellent snow record and can be described as snow-sure. The pollution-free air creates a beautiful pastel coloured environment where reindeer outnumber people.
Day temperatures are usually a few degrees below zero at this time of year with long, sunny days. Akaslompolo is two hours ahead of England, which means that when you get back to base, about 4pm, there is plenty of light.
Cross country ski-ing for all abilities
We try and cater for all abilities of skiing. In practice this means that we set off together and split around lunch time, often staying on the same route, but skiing at a different pace. Those who need to increase the mileage can easily do so.
We meet at the Akas hotel every morning and set off from there either directly from the track or by taking the ski bus to access other areas. Participants also socialise together in the evening .
How to book
Book your holiday to Yllas as soon as you can using Inghams, Crystal and First Choice. We stay at the Akas hotel, but there is also the option of cosy log cabins on a half-board or self catering basis. Other hotels are available, but please check location as one of them is inconveniently located on the other side of the fell, too far away for participation in group activities.
