March brought twenty club members to Akaslompolo, otherwise known as Yllas in the travel brochures. Akaslompolo is situated inside the artic circle, has an excellent snow record and is not usually that cold in March. This year there was the usual 100% snow cover with about 30 cm more than the average 50 cm. It lasted as well with occasional top ups. Temperatures however were extremely low at -30C at 7am rising during the day to -10C, and on better days to -7C or -8C. Unusually green glide wax came in handy for those who thought to bring it. The skiing conditions were delightful for the well prepared and, apart from one day, the sun kept greeting us. The range of skiing abilities in the group enabled members to ski together at their particular level and the socialising continued into the evenings.
