Cross country skiing and racing in Poland

29 February - 4 March 2012

This trip offers Club members a great opportunity to cross country ski and participate in a Worldloppet race in Poland.

About the trip

The Bieg Piastow races will take place at Jakuszyce (Sklarska Poreba) in southern Poland, close to the borders with Germany and the Czech Republic over the weekend 3-4 March 2012.  This LRNSC trip is aimed primarily at those wanting to take part in the races, but is also open to Club skiers who only want to ski recreationally.

There has already been enough interest expressed in the trip to make it a certainty, but places are still available, although there will be a finite limit on numbers because of transport and accommodation constraints.

Travel and accommodation

We will fly to Prague on the morning of Wednesday 29 February and hire vehicles to take us on to Jakuszyce (about a 2-hour trip) that afternoon, returning in the evening on Sunday 4 March.

Accommodation has been arranged at the modern, comfortable Hotel Las, in Szklarska Poreba.  Prices at the Hotel Las are 200 zlotys (about £44.50) B&B single and 260 zlotys (about £58) B&B for a double room.

The hotel is about 10 km from the ski stadium, which is rather remote from other accommodation, so having our hire cars will make life much easier. (We cannot accurately assess the cost of the hire transport until we know final numbers and therefore the size and number of vehicles required).

We hope to be allocated a dedicated lockable wax cabin at the stadium where we can prepare our skis and secure our kit.

The Bieg Piastow cross country ski races

Saturday 3 March 50 km and 26 km in Classical Technique – the 50 km Classical race is the main event of the weekend.

Sunday 4 March 50 km and 30 km in Free (Skating) Technique.

The races are held in undulating wooded terrain, very similar to the nearby countryside in which LRNSC’s trip last year to Jizerska Padesatka took place.

If you have a Worldloppet passport, the two long races count towards the Gold Masters award and the short races for Silver.

What next?

A dozen members have already expressed their intention of joining the trip, but there is still room for more.
