About our 2017 roller ski courses at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit

  • Get a head start when you go cross country skiing

Whatever your aim our roller ski courses can help you.  The focus is on developing balance, coordination and sound technique in a fun and enjoyable way.

Our courses are based on Snowsport England's Nordic Proficiency Awards and you will have the option of registering and being assessed for these Awards.  Our qualified Club instructors are all insured, hold first aid certificates and are CRB checked to enable them to work young people and adults.

Your progression route is taster, beginners' level 1 course, novices' level 2 course supplemented our regular free training and practice sessions, plus Snowsport England skills development courses.

The venue for all our courses is Hillingdon Cycle Circuit in west London which provides an ideal mix of flat, gentle and steeper hills, all with smooth surfaces.

After this if you want to learn to roller ski you can sign up for one of our Level 1 beginners' courses.

Level 1 - learn to roller ski - for complete beginners

You'll learn the basics - how to glide using classic technique [diagonal stride] and double poling, simple turns and how to stop plus you'll learn about equipment. 

If you want go on cross country skiing holiday this is the best preparation!

Your aim will be Snowsport England [SSE] 1 star proficiency - over 4 weeks you should easily achieve this and be on your way to the next level.  If you register for Snowsport England Proficiency Awards [cost: £5.00] you can also be assessed for this scheme at the end of the course.  

The full course comprises 4 sessions but if you book the taster 21 May or 5 November then you can book the following two Level 1 sessions to keep you going with roller skiing.

After the course we recommend you attend our training and practice sessions and our Level 2 course. You can supplement these with Snowsport England's skills development courses.

Level 2 - learn the fundamentals of classic & skate roller skiing - for novices

If you've attended a level 1 course or cross country skied on snow for a couple of weeks and want to improve your skiing, this is the course for you.  You'll develop your balance, coordination and skills so can ski with less effort and tackle gentle hills confidently. 

The focus wil be on developing the full range of classic skiing techniques and progressively introducing skating.  Your aim will be SSE 2 star proficiency and if you register for Snowsport England Proficiency Awards [cost: £5.00] you can also be assessed for this scheme at the end of the course.

The full course comprises five sessions.  It is possible to book single sessions but if this after the course has started please contact us to check if/how we can fit you in.

After the course we recommend you attend our training and practice sessions, enter some roller ski races and check out Snowsport England's skills development courses.

Equipment

You can hire Club equipment [roller skis, boots, poles, protective knee and elbow pads etc] and if you have your own cycle helmet please bring that to wear as well as gloves to protect your hands.

If you're a beginner or novice, we recommend you use the Club equipment first then consider buying your own kit once you're committed and want to practice more.

Venue

All our courses take place at Hillingdon Cycle Circuit in west London which provides an ideal mix of flat, gentle and steeper hills, all with smooth tarmac surfaces.

It has a club house with facilities to make tea and coffee, and where you can change/leave clothes during sessions.
