About this race

Barnaby Norman This new roller ski event for under 20 year olds commemorates former regional BNDS skier, Barnaby Norman, who died tragically in 2018 as a result of a short illness following a chest infection at the age of 19.

It is being organised by BNDS [British Nordic Development Squad] in conjunction with LRNSC [London Region Nordic Ski Club] and The Roller Ski Co with the support of the Norman family.

Barnaby was an enthusiastic and talented young skier who had recently started training with the English section of the BNDS.  He was a promising cross country runner and also brought the skills, balance and core strength he had gained during his six years at the Royal Ballet School to Nordic skiing.  In January 2018 he went to Norway to develop his cross country skiing where he tragically and suddenly passed away.

His family have very generously agreed to provide the trophy for what we hope will become an annual event with the aim of encouraging as many young British Nordic skiers to race against each other regardless of ability and experience.

Race format & skis

It will start with a prologue/time trial where each competitor will get a time, followed by knock-out races until we get winners (the numbers in each knock out race will be determined by the number of competitors).

Skiers in the U20 will race on matched roller skis.  Those in the younger categories will use their own skis or can borrow equipment from us for the event.  There will be no charge for any equipment but you must enter the race in advance so we know what you need.
The course will go clockwise from the clubhouse up the back straight and return the same way with a special agility/ski cross section in the middle to test skills and strengths – the total length is approximately 1km.
